He Volkswagen Jetta is available from € 22,650 ( all prices ). During the first months of its commercialization, Volkswagen makes some launch discounts ( more information ). It is not an update but a new model. It arrived at the market at the beginning of 2011 to replace the one of the same name that began to be sold in August 2005 ( more information ). At the beginning of 2013, a hybrid version was released ( more information ).
Share mechanical elements, engines and certain parts of the cabin with the Golf . It has a four-door body that measures 4.64 meters long, making it 9 centimeters larger than the previous model and only 13 centimeters shorter than the Passat (4.77 meters). The battle has also increased (7.3 centimeters), which results in more space for the legs of the rear occupants. It is a comfortable saloon, stable and pleasant to drive. Inside you can travel with great comfort thanks to its suspension and good sound insulation, although this is slightly worse than the Golf. We have thoroughly tested the diesel version 1.6 TDI 105 HP, whose engine responds well and spends little ( more information on driving impressions ). The cabin has the capacity for four adults to travel comfortably. It stands out because of the large leg room of passengers in the rear seats. The interior clearly reminds the Golf, more by design than materials, since some of these are of lower quality ( more information in the Interior Impressions ). It has a very large boot (510 liters). Among the passenger cars of similar size, only Škoda Octavia (560 liters) and the Renault Fluence (530 liters) are more capable . A SEAT Exeo , a Chevrolet Cruze or a Mazda3 SportSedán have much less boot ( listed ).
The entire range of engines has a very good relationship between performance and consumption. It is possible to choose between four petrol engines -1.2 TSI of 105 HP, 1.4 TSI of 122 or 160 HP and 2.0 TSI of 211 HP-, two Diesel -1.6 TDI of 105 HP and 2.0 TDI of 140 HP- and a hybrid version with a gasoline engine and an electric one -Hybrid 1.4 TSI of 170 CV-. All versions have as standard a six-speed manual gearbox, except for the 105 HP Diesel that has one of five and the hybrid that has an automatic double-clutch “DSG” of seven. This same automatic change is available for the rest of the range, except for the lower-powered gasoline version. There are two versions called “Bluemotion Technology” that have certain measures so that the fuel consumption is the minimum possible – a system of stop and automatic start of the engine in the stops (“Stop / Start”), an alternator that, when the battery It is not below a certain level of load, most of the energy that remains to the engine is in phases of deceleration and tires with low rolling resistance.
The Jetta is available with two trim levels: «Advance» and «Sport». They are distinguished from each other, in addition to certain decorative details of the interior, because in the second the lower part of the grille is chromed, like the two slats that are just below the hood, at the height of the Volkswagen logo. All the versions have as standard, at least six airbags, stability control , air conditioning, daytime running light and start assist system on the slope, among other elements. Alloy wheels are optional in the most affordable versions. At the moment you can not carry xenon headlights, not even optionally ( equipment tokens ).
Price and insurance
The Jetta 1.6 TDI 105 HP can be purchased from € 23,840. It is a much higher price -3850 € – to a Škoda Octavia with the same engine or a Renault Fluence 110 hp -3340 € -. A Ford Focus Sedan 114 hp is also more affordable ( comparative tab ). The price difference of the Jetta with respect to a Golf and a Passat, all three with the same 1.6 TDI diesel engine of 105 HP, is small, especially with respect to the Passat ( comparative tab ). This one has an official discount of 3085 €, something that does not happen in the case of the Jetta. In order to benefit from a discount you have to buy a series of items of equipment ( more information ). The 1.2 TSI petrol version of 105 HP can be purchased from € 22,650. They are € 1,190 less than the 1.6 TDI of 105 HP. Taking into account the difference in approved average consumption and the current price of fuels, it would be necessary to cover 65,000 km to make the diesel variant profitable according to our diesel-gasoline comparator .
better than a Golf -. For example, the plastic on the top of the doors is harder. In addition, some parts adjust a little worse, although the interior, without being very colorful, conveys a greater sense of solidity and quality than other similar models such as the Ford Focus Sedan or the Renault Fluence . The dashboard is cover my car with a soft plastic that is pleasant to the touch. There is no command that is far from the driver or is uncomfortable to operate.
A major change with respect to Golf is the largest space for passengers in the rear seats-21 centimeters more. It is one of the tourisms of its size with more space for the legs of the rear occupants. Even, it is close to the larger ones such as the Ford Mondeo or the Mazda6 . Models with similar characteristics to the Jetta as the Ford Focus Sedan, the Mazda3 SportSedán or the SEAT Exeo have much less space ( interior measurements ). he front seats are comfortable and in the “Advance” versions do not hold the body much. The “Sport” versions have seats with the most marked contours, which mitigated this problem. The driver finds it easy to find a comfortable position at the wheel both for the wide range of regulation of it -in height and depth- as well as the possibility of locating the seat bench very close to the ground or not – there are 7 centimeters of difference between the lowest and highest position-. The access to the cabin is very comfortable because both the front and rear doors have a wide opening angle. In addition, the height and shape of the body make it unnecessary to bend the head in excess to sit. There are many holes to leave objects scattered in the interior. In the doors there are some not very large bags, especially those of the rear seats. The bottom is a soft plastic to try to avoid that it moves what is deposited in them and that makes less noise with the vibrations. You can also leave things that are usually carried on, such as keys, wallet or mobile phone, in the hole under the center console, in front of the gear lever, or inside the front armrest -large and deep-.
It has a capacity of 510 liters, one of the largest among the alternatives to the Jetta ( listed ). For example, a SEAT Exeo has much less capacity (442 liters). On the Jetta, the rear seat backrests can be folded, in the 40/60 ratio, to increase the load capacity. One drawback is that you can only recline from handles that are next to the guides of the trunk lid ( image ), not from inside. There is not a flat cargo fund. It is easy to organize the load because the trunk has regular shapes. The only drawback is that to deposit objects inside you have to save a step of 21 centimeters, the distance between the floor and the end of the body in the loading mouth. The loading edge is 68 cm from the ground ( trunk measurements ). The Volkswagen Jetta is a very comfortable and pleasant saloon to drive. It has a suspension that filters well the irregularities of the asphalt, although not as much as a Renault Fluence something more comfortable. I think that in a Ford Focus Sedan the imperfections of the road are more noticeable. The Jetta can not carry the adaptive suspension ( “DCC”) that is available in the Golf. It’s a shame because it gives very good results ( more information ).
It has a different feel to Golf when you want to drive fast on twisty roads, but the difference, if any, is not great. On motorways and motorways, it is very pleasant because it has a good line stability and allows the driver not to tire until they have passed a good number of kilometers. The Jetta transmits security to the driver. It does not have unexpected reactions that can surprise its driver. The steering is good touch and allows to know at all times what happens under the wheels. It is less direct than that of a Focus Sedan. In this, the slightest hint about the steering wheel results in a turn of the wheels. The cabin has good sound insulation, although not as much as in the Golf. Rolling noise is noticeable inside. The visibility is good in all directions, although you can get to miss some larger exterior mirrors. From May 2012 it is possible to acquire – only in the “Sport” versions – xenon headlights, which guarantee better lighting than the standard ones. A remarkable quality is that it rotates in a small space, given its external measurements. For example, this means saving certain maneuvers when parking. A Volvo S60 , which measures almost the same, needs a lot more space to turn at low speed.
1.6 TDI 105 CV BMT
The 105 hp diesel engine has enough strength in almost any circumstance. It will only be missing some more capacity of response when you want to overtake in little space or gain much speed in a very short time, as well as when going up steep slopes. In these cases it is necessary to reduce a gear if you want the engine not to drown. This gives the power in a very linear way, although greater force is noted between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. To travel at a normal pace, whether on a two-way road or on a motorway, it is a very valid engine.
1.2 TSI 105 CV BMT
During the presentation of the Jetta I could also try the 105 hp petrol variant. I found it more advisable than Diesel of equal power for acceleration capacity, but not if consumption is a priority purchase reason – the 1.2 TSI 105 HP spends 1.1 l / 100 km more than the 1.6 TDI 105 HP, according to the homologated figures-. In addition, it has a more pleasant clutch feel.
EVOLUTION OF RANGE
The Volkswagen Jetta began to be marketed in Spain at the end of 2010, although the first units did not reach dealerships until the first months of 2011. It is a new model not an update that it replaced ( more information ), which was on sale since 2005 The first Jetta that arrived in Europe did it in 1980. Between 1992 and 2005, the Jetta was sold in Europe as Vento, first, and as Bora , later. The Jetta of 2011 began its commercialization with a range of three engines, one of petrol of 105 CV and two Diesel, of 105 and 140 CV. There are four different gearboxes: a five-speed manual, a six-speed manual and a double-clutch automatic (“DSG”) with six or seven ratios. All versions are front-wheel drive.
